A Quick DIY Checklist
Tripped breakers and flickering lights are common in most homes. Before calling an electrician, a few safe checks can tell you whether the issue is minor or needs a professional.
Check the Breaker Panel
If a circuit trips, unplug everything on that circuit, reset the breaker, and plug devices back in one at a time. If it trips again when you plug in a specific device, that appliance is the likely culprit. If the breaker trips with nothing plugged in, the wiring itself may be faulty.
Inspect Outlets and Switches
Warm or discoloured outlets, a burning smell, or sparks when plugging in a device are warning signs of loose connections or overloaded wiring. Stop using the outlet immediately and call a licensed electrician.
Test Your RCD
Your residual current device (RCD) protects against electric shock. Press the test button every few months to confirm it trips correctly. If it does not, the device needs replacing.
When to Call a Professional
Any work inside the switchboard, persistent tripping, or flickering that affects multiple rooms requires a licensed electrician. Never attempt wiring repairs yourself, it is dangerous and often illegal without certification.
Book a Verified Electrician
