AC Servicing Before Summer: The Complete Kerala Homeowner Checklist

29 October 2026· by QuickFIX Global Team

In Kerala, summer does not arrive politely. By March the humidity is already high, and the first really hot week is when every air conditioner in the state is switched on at the same time. That is also when service technicians are fully booked and waiting times stretch from one day to five.

The fix is simple: service your AC before the rush, in the cooler months. This guide explains what a real service involves, how often to do it, and how to tell a proper job from a quick wipe-down.

Why pre-summer servicing matters more in Kerala

Kerala's air carries salt near the coast and heavy moisture everywhere. That combination does three things to an air conditioner:

  • Dust and mould build up on the filter and coil, so the unit cools less while using more electricity.
  • Drainage lines clog, and water starts dripping down the wall or onto the floor.
  • Outdoor units corrode faster, especially within a few kilometres of the sea.

A unit that has run a full summer without a clean loses efficiency quietly. You do not notice it month by month, but the bill does.

The best time to book

Book your service six to eight weeks before the hot season, which in practical terms means January to early February for most Kerala homes. By mid-February, slots fill fast.

If you missed that window, book anyway before the first heatwave. A service done in a quiet week is still cheaper and faster than an emergency repair during peak demand.

What a proper service includes

A genuine split AC service is not a five-minute filter rinse. Ask for these steps, and check that they happen:

  1. Filter removal and washing — dust filters washed, dried and refitted.
  2. Coil cleaning — evaporator coil cleaned, ideally with a coil cleaner rather than water alone.
  3. Blower and drum cleaning — the fan that pushes air out collects a surprising amount of grime.
  4. Drain tray and pipe flush — this is what prevents water leakage later.
  5. Outdoor unit check — condenser fins cleaned, mounting checked, electrical connections inspected.
  6. Gas pressure check — a simple gauge reading tells you whether the refrigerant charge is healthy.
  7. Performance test — unit run for several minutes with a temperature reading at the vent.

A technician who skips the drain flush or the outdoor unit is doing half a job, and you will find out in April.

Deep cleaning versus a standard service

A standard service keeps a regularly maintained unit healthy. Deep cleaning (sometimes called jet or foam cleaning) uses water pressure or foam to clean the coil and blower thoroughly. Homes that have not serviced in more than a year, homes with pets, and homes near busy roads usually need deep cleaning rather than the basic service.

Expect a deep clean to take noticeably longer than a standard service, and to be priced accordingly.

Gas top-up: only when it is actually needed

Refrigerant does not get used up like fuel. If the gas level is low, gas has leaked, and the correct fix is to find and seal the leak first, then refill. A technician who tops up gas every season without checking for a leak is charging you for a problem that will come back. Ask for a leak test before any refill.

How often should you service?

  • One service a year for a unit used mainly at night in bedrooms.
  • Two services a year for units running most of the day, or in coastal homes.
  • Immediately if you notice reduced cooling, unusual noise, a musty smell, or water dripping indoors.

Signs your AC needs attention now

  • Cooling takes much longer than it used to.
  • The room feels cool but never cold.
  • Water dripping from the indoor unit.
  • A damp, musty smell when the unit starts.
  • Rattling, clicking or a hissing sound.
  • Electricity consumption jumping without extra use.

Any of these is cheaper to fix in the off-season than during a heatwave.

What to check before you let a technician start

  • Is the technician identity-verified by the platform?
  • Is the price stated up front, including the inspection charge?
  • Do they carry a vacuum pump and gauges, not just a screwdriver?
  • Is there a workmanship warranty on the service?
  • Will you get an invoice and a booking record for the visit?

On QuickFIX Global every AC service is booked with a fixed price shown before you confirm, performed by a KYC-verified technician, and recorded with a booking ID and invoice, so a warranty claim later is straightforward.

Preparing your home for the visit

Clear access to the indoor unit, keep a power point free, and move anything fragile from below the unit. If the outdoor unit sits on a ledge, make sure it can be reached safely. Small preparations cut the visit time and let the technician focus on the machine.

A short pre-summer checklist

  1. Book your service in January or early February.
  2. Ask for filter, coil, blower and drain cleaning, plus an outdoor unit check.
  3. Request a gas pressure reading, and a leak test if pressure is low.
  4. Replace old remote batteries and confirm all modes work.
  5. Clean or replace the filter yourself once a month during summer.
  6. Keep the invoice for warranty.

Book your AC service now, before the season fills up, and your unit will cool properly on the first hot day, at a lower bill.
